Square Summer Lecture Series

Beat the heat at the Square this summer with this historic lecture series! These one-hour programs are free to the public and will give visitors a chance to look at objects from the Rosson House collections up-close!

All lectures will take place in the South Classroom of the Lath House Pavillion.

May Lecture: “Oysters & Olive Spoons: Victorian Dining”

Thursday, May 22nd at 6:30pm

Dive into the elaborate and fascinating history of dining in the 19th Century during this free, one-hour lecture. How did the Industrial Revolution change food production? Was ice really delivered door-to-door in 19th Century Phoenix? What in the world is mock turtle soup? Learn these things and more while you enjoy an up-close look at dining items from our museum collection.

June Lecture: “Victorian & Edwardian Summer Fashion”

Saturday, June 28th at 1pm

Fashion in the Victorian and Edwardian eras meant a lot of layers- how did anyone keep cool in the Arizona heat? Find out during this one-hour lecture, which will also include a close look at fashion items from the Rosson House collections.

July Lecture: “Death Photography & Funeral Biscuits: 19th Century Mourning”

Saturday, July 12 at 1pm

During a time when your life expectancy at birth was 45, the Victorians created many rituals around grief and mourning. What was the life expectancy for children in the 19th Century? How many people died during the Civil War from disease alone? What did Queen Victoria have to do with it? Learn more about these traditions during this one-hour lecture.

    The Square — with the Rosson House Museum, Visitor Center, the Heritage Gallery, and the Shop the Square Museum Store — is located Heritage & Science Park on the Southeast corner of 6th Street and Monroe (1 block south of Van Buren and west of 7th Street) in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. A public parking garage–called Heritage Garage–is conveniently located on the Southeast corner of 5th Street and Monroe (please bring your parking garage ticket with you to be validated for a reduced parking fee).

    Bus routes 1, 3, and 7 all stop at Van Buren and 7th Street. Light rail stops at 3rd Street and Washington (west bound) and 3rd Street and Jefferson (east bound).
