New in the House

  • Dining Room remains closed

    The masons are making progress but work continues on the dining room fireplace. Once complete, we need to clean and put all the furniture, curtains, silver, glassware and porcelain back. We hope to reopen in two weeks.

    Join experienced interpreters and docent trainers Kathy Farretta and Nikki Lober for a day-long workshop on how to create the vital connections between visitors and your museum or historic site that will keep them coming back.

    Starting with an overview of interpretation in museums, Kathy and Nikki will show you valuable techniques for using your exhibits to teach and entertain through Great Guided Tours.

  • Docent training dates for next fiscal year

    Thursday, September 21, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. How to Read Your Audience.  We hope to bring back Volunteer Training expert Kathy Faretta to illustrate cues that reveal what your audience is thinking and then practice ways to change your tour in response. This will improve our ability to deliver an excellent visitor experience.  This is an important class for everyone.

    Thursday, November 16, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Incorporating Celebrate into Your Tour. Our annual holiday tree decorating will be back again. This class will share the stories and meaning behind each tree.

    Thursday, January 18, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Guest Speaker – tbd.

    Thursday, March 15, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Dish Exhibit Training. Learn about the newest exhibit inside the Rosson House and outline strategies for incorporating this information into your tours.

    All docents must attend at least two Continuing Education classes during the year. Due to poor turnout last year, we will be reducing the number of classes to four and increasing the importance of their content.
