Voices of the River
We are proud to present Voices of the River, a free Heritage Square program on Sunday, November 3rd, featuring conservation photographer and author, Dave Showalter, and local artist and community activist, Yolanda Hart Stevens. This collaborative event will explore the confluence of art and environmental conservation, focusing on the essential role that water plays in both our natural ecosystems and our local communities.
Dave Showalter – Living River: The Promise of the Mighty Colorado
Join conservation photographer Dave Showalter in an epic visual journey through the vast Colorado River watershed as he talks about his new book, Living River: The Promise of the Mighty Colorado. Dave spent 5 years documenting the lifeforce of the river; the species that need it to survive, including humans; the riverkeepers working to protect it; and so much more. This is a story of hope, one that shows the resilience of watersheds, the life that water brings, and the epic journey of Dave and the Colorado River.
Yolanda Hart Stevens – Connections to Holistic Material: Native Culture Today and Tomorrow
Join Yolanda Hart Stevens as she talks about water, land, and the environmental challenges impacting Native communities. From birth to death, the mesquite tree is an integral part of life for many who call the desert home. The mesquite tree is just one of many holistic materials, elements of our natural environment, that are vital to sustaining Native culture and practices. But climate change and environmental degradation are changing the landscapes of Arizona. From the lack of water resources to the loss of mesquite trees, the future is uncertain.
