Mapping Early Phoenix with AZ History Co Op
January 3, 2020 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Free – $7Come to Heritage Square to learn more about Phoenix and Arizona history. This field trip, designed especially for AZ History Co Op, will add to the group’s study of local history. The day begins at 10:30 in our exhibit gallery which features Mapping Early Phoenix. We will refresh our memories on map reading skills and then use the maps to tell stories about the changing shape of Arizona, early Phoenix settlement patterns, and the impact of railroads.
At 11:30, we will tour the 1895 Rosson House where we will focus on stories of life in Early Phoenix. We will talk about how Rosson was mayor and tell stories from letters and oral histories. This tour will be limited to the students and no more than 3 adult chaperones. Those who wish to tour the house but don’t fit into this group are welcome to take one of the regularly scheduled tours at 11am or noon. After the tour we’ll break for lunch which will be held picnic style in the park.
After lunch, we’ll reinforce our map reading skills by taking a scavenger hunt in the park. The hunt has three skill levels so that everyone can participate. Each site has a clue to be solved and a prize will be awarded to all who finish. And if that isn’t enough, stop in to the Visitor Center and explore a timeline of the valley from 700 AD to 1912.
This tour has limited availability. Sign up before Sept 1 to reserve your space.
